We know from our knowledge of biology that the thyroid gland releases certain hormones which are responsible for the normal metabolism and the functioning of various organs. Sometimes this gland can go on an overdrive and lead to a condition called as hypothyroidism, but pregnancy allow for no room for excess. Thyroid hormones are responsible for the baby’s brain development and also the nervous system. It is also responsible for the mother’s wellbeing in pregnancy. How do we assess the thyroid levels in pregnancy? It is with blood check of free T3 , free T4 or thyroid stimulating hormone. In women with hypothyroidism, the goal is to maintain the mother’s free T4 within the normal range.
