As in any field of development, walking has a range as well-some babies start walking earlier than others, but usually, if otherwise progressing well, we can wait at least till 15 months, and often till 18 months if showing signs of progress before we need to investigate in detail. Of course, careful clinical and neurologic assessment by an experienced doctor at the follow up reviews at 12 and 15 months is important, with further management depending on the clinical picture. If not walking even by 18 months, we need to rule out muscular dystrophy (especially in boys) as well as other conditions.
